Mama Josephine's is the Quintessential Neighborhood
Dining Spot - Riverfront Times
"
Always on the prowl for authentic
fried chicken, I sampled that offered by Mama
Josephine's. HMMMMMMMM good! This is the real deal not
some dried out deep fried tastless what-ever. It is
gently pan fried. Straight out of the south! I live so
close I can walk----and walk I will need to!" -- Elaine
"I called before I left work and
they had an order of delicious fried catfish waiting for
me to pick up! The
fried okra and mac & cheese
were very tasty too! It was pretty busy, but they had
it together and waiting for me! Enjoyed giving my former
neighbor and the wonderful proprietor, Mary, a
congratulatory hug on her new restaurant!" -- Shannon
"I just had dinner at Mama Josephine's! It was so good!
I am a graduate student living away from home so a
home-cooked meal is something I don't have very
often--and even when I am home it's never this good!
(sorry mom!) Money is also not something I have very
often- so the reasonable prices were an added bonus.
I highly recommend the meatloaf (which I'm usually not a
fan of-but this meatloaf was amazing!) I also had the
mashed-potatoes and corn which were equally as
delicious. They were very busy and I was there
near close so they were running out of a few items and
the food took a little while to come out, but everyone
was hustling and doing their best. It's only day 4 so I
know they will work out the kinks. I can't wait to
go back and try something else! It's great to have
another place in Shaw we can walk to on a beautiful
day/evening." -- Maureen
From my dad: "Mama Josephine's
gets 'two mayo-covered thumbs up' for lunch. After my
Garden visit, I drove over to The Hill to try a sandwich
place called Adriana's ... but the line was out the
door. So I turned around & went looking for the place
you recommended. ... The club
sandwich was tasty & huge (I brought half home) and
it was served with steaming hot crinkle cut fries. That
& a Coke (with free refills available) cost just over 9
bucks with tax. I'd be willing to try it again to see
how her lasagna tastes [don't tell Mom], and they also
feature fried chicken & catfish. I'd say it's a keeper."

A
hidden gem in the Shaw neighborhood. We went there on a
Friday night and were seated immediately. Menu items
sounded to good to be true. Without exception, the food
was fantastic. Two of us had the meat loaf, which is a
dicey dish wherever you order it. If I had closed my
eyes and ta...ken a bite, I would have swore my mother
made it. The pulled pork sandwich also garnered a thumbs
up. The mostacoli (sadly they were out of lasagna), was
met with great satisfaction. The fried chicken came out
crispy and flavorful. The waitress was also very
attentive, keeping our drinks refreshed. We were also
fortunate enough to meet the owners, both of whom gave
us a short history of Mama Josephine. Great food at very
reasonable prices. Even though I would like to keep it
as my little secret, I wholeheartedly recommend it to
everyone. A full five ***** - Tony
I'm from the South and "phenomenal" is the only word
that describes Mama Josephine's. From the perfect fried
chicken, pulled pork BBQ, mac-n-cheese, turnip greens,
onion rings to the sweet tea and pecan pie, oh my!
Someone knows how to cook! Everything was homemade
fresh, good portion sizes, great prices, and excellent
service. The best new restaurant in St. Louis and my new
home away from home. -- Kristine
